For a day of fun with games, food and a good selection of slightly used items make sure you visit the Strathmore Youth Centre this Saturday.
The Strathmore Youth Centre is hosting the event as a fundraiser to get 18 Strathmore and area youths up to Edmonton for the experience of a lifetime.
The Spring Fling will be at the centre May 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to raise funds for their trip. They’ll have everything from a balloon drop and other carnival games to cotton candy and a thrift sale to entertain the entire family. The centre will also be open for people to use.
The youths have already dedicated about 15 volunteer hours each to raising enough for the trip, which should cost about $4,300 total, and are almost done.
“The kids have really stepped up to the plate,” said organizer Monica Soltys. “They’ve had to make sacrifices to get this far.”
She said many of the youths have had to make the choice between hanging out with friends or spending the time volunteering and they’ve all chosen to volunteer to get closer to their trip. Soltys is hoping that after this event they’ll be done fundraising for the trip up to youth conference later this month.
“Some of these kids have never been to Edmonton before,” said Soltys. “This is a lot of firsts for a lot of them.”
The conference they will be a attending for three days later this month, is a Christian youth conference that fills Rexall Place with more than 16,000 youth and their chaperones each year for a weekend of keynote speakers, bands and tons of fun. Soltys said this is the second year they’ve sent youth to the event and it was such a success last year they just had to do it again this year.
