Any and all girls are welcome to come don their skates, grab a stick and try Canada’s game.
A girls hockey night will be held at the Strathmore Family Center in the blue arena on Aug. 26 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. and any girl over the age of nine is welcome to come and give hockey a try.
If you are female and live in Wheatland County, you are welcome to come out.
“We’re hoping to introduce hockey to some girls and hope that they have a good time,” says Fern Pagenkopf, the female director for Strathmore Minor Hockey.
There is no previous experience required.
The only things that are required are a pair of skates, a helmet, a hockey stick, and a desire to play hockey.
The helmet is mandatory to take the ice.
As a bonus the entire event will be free of charge for everyone who comes out.
The evening will include two hours of on ice drills and some games all led by Tristan Desmet and some members of the Strathmore Rockies.
Desmet is a Strathmore girl, born and raised, who has some National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) experience with the University of Maine.
She has also played for the Strathmore Rockies and the Calgary Oval X-treme.
The Rockies are members of the Western Women’s Hockey League (WWHL) as are the X-treme.
The Rockies play right here in Strathmore and are dedicated to bringing hockey to the younger generations of women.
“This is a good opportunity to come out and try hockey,” says Pagenkopf.
Pagenkopf would like all the participants to RSVP by Aug. 25 so that they have general numbers available.
However, the evening will take place no matter how many girls are there.
This is the second girls’ hockey night this summer. The first was held at the end of March where they had more then 20 girls show up.
Pagenkopf figures they will get more girls this time, and would be glad to see many more pairs of skates grace the blue arena’s ice.
“(It’s) two hours of free ice time before the season starts,” she said.
“Come out and give the game a try.”
