Low-flying planes pinpoint water, not speeders

From Dec. 1, 2007 to March 31, 2008, motorists and residents along the busy Queen Elizabeth II highway in Alberta may see some unusual behaviour - low-flying aircraft, travelling in straight lines crossing the roadway.

Part of a groundwater survey commissioned by Alberta Environment and the Alberta Geological Survey, the low-flying aircraft use electromagnetic waves to examine the underground geology of the area, which will help locate undetected underground water supplies.

This technique - called airborne geophysics - allows geophysical information to be collected without disturbing the land. The electromagnetic waves used in the survey are harmless to people and will not interfere with the use of cell phones, televisions or other electronic devices.

This information will be used to help Alberta Environment and the Alberta Geological Survey to better understand the geology of the area, as well as help to map groundwater resources. The survey results will be correlated with information collected from monitoring wells and historical information, helping to increase the amount of knowledge about groundwater in Alberta.

A contractor will perform a series of flights between Pigeon Lake in the west and Camrose in the east, and as far south as Red Deer, for a total of 70 flying days.
