Calgary Region 4-H members excel in communications

Calgary Region 4-H members excel in communications

In 2006 over 1,200 4-H members from the Foothills, Kneehill, Mountainview, Rockyview and Wheatland Districts competed in communication competitions.

Members began at the club level, with the top communicators moving on to the area and then district competitions prior to the regional level.

The regional presentations competition, co-sponsored by AltaLink, took place March 18 in Airdrie for juniors, intermediates and seniors members. The junior and senior public speaking competition was held on March 19 in Airdrie.

Winners of the junior level presentations were Austin Fisher and Mitchell Miller of Bow Valley Horse Club, Rockyview District. Reserve was Jessica Pratt of Hussar Multi Club, Wheatland District.

The intermediate champions were Hal and Austin Nixdorff from Irricana Beef and Multi Club, Rockyview District, the reserve champions were Kaylynn and Shayla Malmberg from Arrowwood River Wranglers, Wheatland District, and runner-up Randi Ashbacher and Jessica Williams also from the Arrowwood River Wranglers .

The senior presentation champions were Michael Gale and Curtis Johnson from Westbrook Multi, Rockyview District. Reserve senior champion was Landon Lewoniuk of Airdrie Beef, Rockyview District. Both of these presentations advance to the provincial senior competition next month in Calgary representing the Calgary 4-H Region. Congratulations to all of the 4-H members across the Calgary 4-H Region that participated in this new and growing form of communication.

In the junior public speaking competition, the Foothills District representatives claimed both spots in the top two.

Travis Brockway, Millarville Saddlesores, was declared champion while Laura Clark of the Millarville Mutts was reserve. Kylie Christie of Huxley Beef, Kneehill District was the runner-up. Other junior competitors were Katelyn Bollum, Airdrie Helping Hands, J. T. Ross, Crossfield - Madden Beef, Brook Barber, Three Hills Wranglers, Kyle Billings, Eagle Beef, Breanna Macklin, Sundre Multi, Krista Stout, Strathmore Rusty Spurs, Amy Kalbhen, Rockyford Multi. Everyone left the junior competition feeling inspired by the excellence of these ten awesome speakers.

In the senior level public speaking competition the champion was Amanda Werbisky of Rockyview?s West Foothills Multi, reserve champion was Lauren Evans from Foothill?s High River Stetsons. Both of these young ladies will represent the Calgary 4-H Region in the provincial senior?s public speaking competition on April 8. Adeleen Bayes of Three Hills Wranglers, Kneehill was the runner-Up. Other senior speakers were Jared Foat, Cremona Beef, Pascale Wouters, Mountainview Dairy, Rae Westersund, Okotoks Outriders, Katie Rudolph, Strathmore Rusty Spurs, Bailey Larsen, Cheadle Beef, Stina Nagel, Airdrie Flying Hooves, and Jenifer Koehler, Three Hills Wranglers.

The intermediate public speaking competition, sponsored by the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede, will be held on Saturday, April 8th at the Greenwood Inn in Calgary. Coinciding with the intermediate competition will be the provincial senior level finals for both public speaking and presentations. Congratulations to all competitors on their incredible success in 2006. Good luck to those senior members advancing to the provincial level.
