Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it?s a kite. In fact, it?s many kites and the people fighting the gusty day to control their kites were in a field just east of the Rosebud Church.

On April 1, the Rosebud Theatre opened its new play, W.O. Mitchell?s ?The Kite? and to kick off the celebration the theatre invited people out to fly their kite.

?We had between 140 and 160 kites up at any one time,? said Bob Davis, Executive Director. ?We also had a static display of 138 kites and between 10 and 25 single kites in the sky.?

According to Davis, parents and kids alike came out to enjoy the festivities with about 150 people in total enjoying the beautiful southern Alberta weather.

The larger displays, including the static kites, were brought to Rosebud and set up by the Kite Guys, a company out of Airdrie.

The day of kite flying was really two-fold for Davis and the rest of the crew at Rosebud Theatre.

?We always try to have some kind of celebration when we open a new show,? he said. ?And we wanted to fly 100 kites in the sky for Alberta?s Centennial.?

The majority of the kite-flying participants hailed from Rosebud, Drumheller, Standard and even Strathmore.

?This is the first time we have ever done a W.O. Mitchell play,? he added. ?It has a lot of meaning and is also a tremendously funny comedy that should resonate well with all of our patrons.

?It makes sense for us to do a W.O. Mitchell play because he was a great Western Canadian writer and here we are in the middle of the prairies.?

The day could not have been better for those hoping to fly their kites high into the heavens. With the winds gusting quite heavily, many of the younger kite-fliers had trouble getting their kites to come down at times.

?The Kite? runs from April 1 until June 18 at the Rosebud Theatre and is sure to be a big hit for all age groups.
