Origin Malting & Brewing Co. wins four awards
Origin Malting won four awards at the Alberta Beer Awards.
A local malt brewery in Strathmore that's been open less than one year, has been named one of the best makers of beer in the province. Origin Malting & Brewing Co., won four awards at the Alberta Beer Awards, which were hosted by the Alberta Craft Small Brewers Association last week.
They won a gold medal for Brown Beer with their Last Post Brown Ale, a silver medal for their spiced beer The Darkness Chocolate Porter, another silver medal for Trendy Beer of the Year: New England style 'Gettin' All Hopped Up Ale', and a gold for Best Of Show for the Last Post Brown Ale.
The first annual Alberta Beer Awards were held at the Palace Theatre in Calgary on March 14 and the event also coincided with the second annual Alberta Craft Brewing Convention.
The winners were chosen from over 320 beers that were submitted by 57 breweries. Brewery of the Year was awarded to Blind Enthusiasm Brewing Company.
Origin Malting and Brewing's Kyle Geeraert explained, that breweries begin submitting entries to the competition in February and over a series of weekends judging is completed.
Origin Malting and Brewing opened only on August 4 and now they have been recognized provincially and as one of the best in the game.
“It's been kind of cool, we've won five beer awards this month already,” said Geeraert.
“It was definitely a shock. We were really excited. It was definitely not expected at all. To win one award was cool, for our brown ale, then we won gold with that and silver for two other beers and then to win best in show, which is the best beer that got submitted,” said Geeraert.
“To be judged the best beer in Alberta out of all of those beers and to win best in show, that was really cool,” he said.
