My name is Jeff Clemens and I'm the newest addition to the team at the Strathmore Standard. I'm excited to be joining a great team here to cover the news in Strathmore and the Wheatland County area.

A little bit about me, I grew up in Calgary and have lived there almost my whole life. I've had a lot of experiences in different small towns through going camping with my parents when I was younger so I definitely know how much fun a small town fair or rodeo can be.

I began writing while attending the University of Calgary for an English Degree and started working with The Gauntlet, the U of C's student run paper. I wrote for them for the entire time I was at U of C and met some amazing people there. It was my time there that made me realize how much I enjoyed journalism.

After completing my degree at U of C I took a year off school and lived in Japan to teach English. I lived in a smaller city on the island of Hokkaido called Takikkawa. That was a great experience and I met some amazing people there. They had an international society in Takikawa so I was able to interact with some of the people that I wasn't necessarily teaching which was a lot of fun. One of the best classes was a baking class where all of the foreigners from different parts of the world made dishes they would make in their country. Oatmeal chocolate chip cookies were extremely popular.

When I returned from Japan I wasn't sure what to do and thought about becoming a teacher. In what was likely one of my best mistakes I missed the deadline to apply for the U of C education program. Instead I decided to go to SAIT for their journalism program which led to two amazing years with some great classmates. I even had the chance to work with the Calgary Flames and cover some of their season.

I've had a great first week out here in Strathmore seeing two councils, lots of sports and how generous the town is through multiple charity events. It makes me excited for the future and everything else that's coming.
