Local senior receives award 0
Kirsten Mundy Multimedia Editor Jean Kirby, Redland resident, has spent much of her life helping others, and was recently honoured with a Minister's Senior Service Award for her work within the Rockyford community.
For many people lending a helping hand is something they do on the odd occasion, if a close friend needs it. For Jean Kirby, a Redland resident, it's just a way of life.
"Anybody who needed to go to the doctor or go here, or go there, I'd find out and offer my time to drive them," said Kirby of how she came to be nominated for the 2012 Minister's Senior Service Awards.
The awards ceremony was on June 6, and although Kirby wasn't able to attend, she said someone had called to say her award was in the mail.
"It was sort of a surprise and sort of a shock," said the 84-year-old lady. "I appreciate it. I think I earned it, or at least I must have."
She said a friend and fellow volunteer Gail Garvin is who nominated her. In addition to her time spent driving neighbours to appointments, Kirby spends her days volunteering with the Rockyford United Church and the Rockyford Friendship Club.
Through her work in the community it's unlikely anyone in the Rockyford area has made it very long without enjoying some of her baking, but it's all just part of her job as a community member, said Kirby.
She explained that everyone takes a turn, and it means hers comes up every so often. Although she was flattered to receive the award, she didn't feel she should be alone in being honoured.
"There must be so many others," said Kirby.
For those who she has helped, Kirby expressed that it was all about the way it made them feel, which indicates she likely is the only one.
On one occasion, she was on her hands and knees cleaning a floor when a friend was unable to wipe her kitchen floor.
"That was my visit, and it made her happy," said Kirby.
Other times she has baked special deserts for those who are having a hard time, to add something sweet to their days.
"It's just being helpful in the community," said Kirby.
