Young girl from Siksika dies in car accident
A 12-year-old Siksika girl is dead after the vehicle she was travelling in rolled over on Highway 557 near Arrowwood on Jan. 1.
Gleichen RCMP, Vulcan EMS and Fire and Arrowwood Fire Department responded to the scene in which the girl, Kelsi Bird, was located and pronounced dead at the scene.
Five other occupants of the vehicle sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital.
Const. Chris Kelly of the Gleichen RCMP said the other occupants were treated for various injuries, such as broken limbs, cuts and scrapes and then released.
He said one passenger in the vehicle, a pregnant woman, was transported by STARS as a precautionary measure due to her condition.
He said both the mother-to-be and her unborn child are fine.
Kelly said the passengers in the back of the vehicle were not wearing seatbelts, including Bird.
?Had seatbelts been worn this tragedy wouldn?t have happened,? Kelly said.
The collision has been confirmed as a single vehicle rollover however it is still under investigation at this time and no further information will be released until police conclude their investigation.
?It looks like driver error,? said Kelly.
?It was a terrible circumstance and -- I hate to say -- bad luck.?
Alcohol is not considered to be a factor.
The family was returning home from a New Year?s event in Stand Off.
